Centre Wellington Food Bank
Our warmest thanks goes out to the employees of A O Smith for the 500+ lbs of food and $1000+ dollars donated to the CW Food Bank. The fundraiser and food drive was held between July 9th and 16th. This picture shows many of the items that were donated that were delivered to the CW Food Bank in Fergus. These items are especially popular to the community that uses the CW Food Bank and we appreciate the effort that A O Smith (GSW) its affiliates and employees, has put forward for especially during the summer which is a time that donations drop and our need is especially large.
Caitlin Hall and staff at Re Root CSA and their customers have generously donated market shares to the Food Bank. These shares allow Food Bank clients access to locally grown organic fruits and vegetables. Each Saturday from June to October, fresh produce is picked up at the Elora Market and taken to the Food Bank. Manager Fred has designated Saturday afternoon as market day. It runs on a first-come, first-serve basis. Saturday was chosen for this market day as fresh produce will not last until the first client shopping day on Tuesday. The first Saturday market day had a turnout of over 25 individuals and all the produce was taken and none wasted. ” I see this as another important example of people helping people” said Fred. The Food Bank thanks Re Root and everyone involved for this generous harvest that addresses the need for safe, healthy, locally produced food.

Eight-year front desk volunteer Marilyn Kearn will be leaving the Centre Wellington Food Bank by the end of the month. She has been an invaluable asset to the Food Bank and to the community. Food Bank manager Fred expressed shock when he first heard about her departure. “At first it was disbelief . . . I was shocked because Marilyn has been my mentor and guide in my role as the new Food Bank manager. She tacitly and sometimes boldly made me aware of the many nuances and complexities that are part of wearing this hat. However, after hearing her reasons for the move I wholeheartedly accepted the decision.” Life will go on but she will truly be missed by our clients, volunteers and donors. Our heartfelt thanks for her many years of service and best wishes for the future go out to her. Food Bank staff, volunteers and board members are holding a farewell BBQ for Marilyn on June 29th.
The Centre Wellington Food Bank is honoured to have been given the opportunity to be the home of the Centre Wellington community kitchen. This kitchen project was the direct result of a successful grant application offered by the Wellington-Waterloo Community Futures Development Corporation. “The money from the grant must solely be utilized for a community kitchen,” stated the application. The focus behind the successful bid lay in the food bank’s vision; a vision that focused on having the kitchen be a partnership with various interested community groups. These groups will have access to the kitchen based on their specific communal vision. Food bank manager Fred said “the kitchen will be a very special place in the community because it will bring together different people with ideas and dreams that help promote an awareness of the importance of food education, food nutrition and food sustainability all marinated in the celebration of community.”
The kitchen will be in operation sometime in March.
